57 years ago, my Uncle Ralph Thomas (KH6UK/W2UK) was on Oahu using his Ham Radio. The newspaper back home would write “If Hawaii is ever linked to the US Mainland by radio or television, it may well be because of Ralph Thomas”.

Ralph just answered these glowing reports with the statement that he was just in the right place at the right time.

A few years ago I was interviewed about the event because I was now a Ham in Hawaii. There was a Ham in Hilo Hawaii trying to break this record 50 years later!
