Fans of the British comed Fawlty Towers (John Cleese) may remember the time where Basil asks his wife “Shall I move the hotel a bit to the right?” or some such joke. Although this sounds silly, it happens all the time.

I used to work for Hewlett Packard and there were many times where we would move people around to be close to their manager. That 10 people would move floors because their manager was elsewhere in the building, seemed stupid to us.

We once planned for a year and then consolidated 3 data buildings into one and moved hundreds of mainframe computers into that builing over Presidents Day weekend. It was an incredible feat and most to all of the employees would never have known that their mainframes and business had moved if we didn’t tell them. Oh the planning. We no sooner moved the system when the airconditioning had to be upgraded. I don’t know who sized them, but…

Just a year or two later we determined that we now had more computers than the room would fit. This room was the size of a football field and we were running out of room. So how did we fix it? We did a Fawlty Towers, we took two out of every three rows of computers and moved them forward enough to make room for another row. We are talking 50 or more rows or 30 or so systems, all moving around in a room.

I was once able to save the day when I recovered data that we THOUGHT we were backing up for a year, but were not. So yes, even the best have their bad days.

Only in the computer indusry could you move most of your business and nobody would notice. If only it was like that in farming. Here we plant coffee and it stays in place for 50 to 100 years. Kinda like grapes and not like corn.

Speaking of grapes and corn yet having more to do with coffee, I still have a discount going on roasted coffee and it ships with your very own free Hawaiian keychain. Check it out quick at http://ItsKona.Com befoe the sale moves somewhere to the right. The magic discount code is KEYCHAIN
