For those not familiar with that tree, it is a tropical also known as Barbados Cherry, West Indian Cherry and Wild Crapemyrtle.

Its claim to fame is massive amounts of vitamin C in the fruit. Where 100 g of orange juice contains 83% of your daily recommended amount of vitamin C, the same volume of acerola juice would give you a whopping 1667% of the daily recommended amount! WOW! One needs to be careful not to chow down on too many of the fruit because an overdose may cause stomachaches and diarrhea.

You can imagine that the fruit might be bitter, however, I planted a variety called Manoa Sweet Acerola. Based upon my research, it appears that these fruit may already be ripe! That seems a bit early because I don’t really remember seeing the fruit large or ripe a week or two ago when we planted these things. I may grab one and try it out in the morning. I’ll report back if I decide to pick one so soon after planting.

UPDATE!

Although small, the fruit seems ripe enough, just a small amount of tang to it, yet fairly sweet too. The fruit I picked was the size of a large cherry or a small strawberry.
