I am offering $15 an hour and can pay cash. Yet, I still have to plead with people to come and do what is not really hard work.

So, are people out here just lazy? Well, yes and know. It is a known problem that people will work a while and then just stop, or will come in late after an early morning surf session. I have seen a package delivery guy park his truck (at lunchtime), enter the back and exiot in board shorts with a surfboard, obly to return a half hour or so later and reverse the actions. There is nothing wrong with that, but understand that surfing may take precidence over other tasks or jobs.

So they tell me that Hawaii is one of the lowest unemployment states in the U.S. I looked that up today, and although not number 1, we are close to it. Hawaii ranks the 9th lowest unemployment rate with only 5.7% people out of work and looking. So it is fairly easy to find a job here if you want. Many people have found that they can get a job by just looking at a different career. For example, with all my background in telecommunications and computers, I did not thing I would end up as a front desk clerk at a timeshare condo fresort. Yet I fit in fine and the job was easy. I have an airconditioned office, nice view of the Pacific, low stress and constant paycheck. I just had to smile and try my best to help the customers.

I tell people that if you are thinking of a job out here, they might consider taking a job in perhaps a field they want to work, but may not be qualified to work in. Oftentimes, just showing up for work and being dependable is enough for some one to want to train you in a job.

If you have a hobby or golf, perhaps you want to work at a golf course. Perhaps you scuba. You could work on an excursion boat helping visitors scuba or snorkle. If you have worked on Capitol Hill, we need windmill technicians (think windbags). :-)

With the exception of Vermont, the other lower unemployment states are all in the midwest like the Dakotas, Nebraska, Iowa and Utah. I would think that most jobs there involve farming, where out jobs out here involve farming and visitor and hospitality industries.
