At a fruit growers meeting tonight we talked about sapotes (which are sweet soft fruit). Many people have tried many varieties of the fruit and we often get recommendations based upon our particular altitude (which just a mile away can be vastly different).

For example, star apple was grown as an ornamental here, but now is grown for the fruit. They say that one week there will be no fruit, then shazam, the tree is full of it the next week. It tases like a persimmon.

Some of the sapotes are used to make smoothies and may taste like chocolate or butterscotch or pear.

One of the sapotes they mentioned is Miracle Fruit, which I am already growing. It appears there is a large demand fro the fruit over on Oahu (Honolulu) for patients taking anti-cancer drugs. The berry makes sour taste sweet and many of the meds they take taste better with a miracle berry taken first.

I also had my first taste of a Jujube, which tasted a bit like an apple.

Anyway, it was an interesting meeting with some free tastings of various fruits to top off the evening.
