20 years ago, on September 11th 1992, the strongest hurricane in state recorded history hit Hawaii. In fact, as it traveled westard, it changed course at the very last minute and the eye came just over the island of Kauai. The category 4 storm did 1.8 billion dollars of damage and had 145 mph winds.

If you visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iniki you can see the 90 degree change of storm track it took at the very last minute. Hint: zoom in on the ā€œLā€ shapped map.

As you can imagine, the islands were not prepared for such an event, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center held off issuing warning because it did not appear to be threatening.

Ham Radio operators helped and were instrumental in communicating to emergency reponders on island and on Oahu.

Years later I spoke with friends who had lived through it and am glad that I was not there. Although I have emergency communication skills, I am glad that I was not in the center of that disaster.
