When I was moving to Hawaii I set up a post office box here and called my utility companies to give them the new address. This would allow me to pay the bills for my house which had not yet sold and receive my return of deposit.

When I called one company, I gave the woman my address and she said that they could not send me any bills by mail. Why, I asked. “We don’t mail overseas”. I tried for a while to explain to here that Hawaii, while separated by water from the mainland was a state (the 50 in the name Hawaii-50 meaning the 50th state) and that there was no difference in cost sending a letter from Georgia to Hawaii as it was to send from Atlanta to Marietta Georgia, a few miles away. She would not believe me because it appears a neighbor once sent a package to Hawaii and it cost a ton of money. I gave up and let that letter be delivered to my old PO box and had a mail forward set up.

Then in preparation of the Atlanta Olympics, people would call in to order event tickets. In one publicized account, a family from New Mexico wanted tickets. The woman refused and told them that they needed to contact the Olympic office in their own country. They said you are thinking of “Mexico”, we are “New Mexico” to which she replied, “new Mexico, old Mexico, you still need to go through your own country!”.
