An Iron Chef or an Iron Man?

As you may know, the Ironman Race started over on Oahu and spread throughout the world. The biggest and most well-known race moved to Kailua-Kona and is here each year now.

While there have been a few missteps in the past (people using paint on the roads to write personal messages, and the unintentional slap in the face of local coffee farmers), the race goes on. Some locals embrace the race and volunteer, others stay as far away as possible as gridlock sets in with our limited roads and restricted access to shopping and other venues. Just as if a storm was approaching, some lay in supplies and stay home and wait.

Gordon decided that he wanted to join the race and from what I hear, should do well competing. I doubt he will come in with a very early time, but as long as he actually starts in the race, he will be well ahead of me.

I’m not sure if I will head into town to watch any of the race, perhaps I will, but I don’t know.

There have been two thoughts in my head for quite some time. One has to with with American Idol. I always wondered what Simon and crew would have said if Bruddah Iz had come on the stage to sing. because of his immense size (and seeing what happened with Simon in the British series), he might have really rolled his eyes. But it would have been interesting to watch the judges and audiences reaction when Iz would have started strumming his uke and started to sing. I would bet that you could have heard a pin drop and heard people actully start to cry at the beauty.

The other thought I have had does not elicit the emotion of IZ, but still would be neat. That would be for Gordon to eat at a couple places in town and hear his review of the food that locals line up for. My two favorites are the Big Island Grill for its big plates of filling food. The other is the Kona Brewing Company and their local beer and fantastic pizza.

To tell you the truth, I do wish I could be closer to town to more often enjoy my favorite, the Captain Cook pizza and a Dukes ale.

I’d have to be an Ironman not to get misty at that thought.
