Gold Is Where You Find It

I did a bit of prospecting back in Georgia when I was younger, but now I am not as young or limber. Having moved to Hawaii, prospecting would be better to go to the beaches with a metal detector. I got into prospecting when I had a big satellite dish and watched the gold prospecting shows and finally signed up. I attended group digs and learned about sluicing, panning.

When people asked me I would tell them to look where gold is and not where it isn’t. When they said that was a stupid answer I pointed at the desk and said is there gold there? If not, why look. Look in streams, and since gold is very heavy, go down to the bedrock. Look for streams or water that moves slowly around a corner, that is where the heavy gold will fall down.

Another thing I learned is that if you are constantly looking for gold, you are missing part of the adventure. I would leave my job in the air conditioned 21 story building and drive up north to pitch a tent, set up a pump and interact with nature. Sure I was prospecting, but I was also experiencing nature and leaving the corporate grind behind.

While looking for elusive gold, remember that it is not always the goal but the trip that makes it more worthwhile.
