On one of the consumer forums I frequent, I often see people posting technical questions like this:

“We are going on a 7 day cruise and need to be able to call home from on board”.

“My son will be staying at school late working on a robotics project and need a way for him t obe able to call if he needs to stay late or come home early.”.

Are we so dependent on communications that these issues become problems if not addresses?

My parents went to Europe for (what I guess) were weeks at a time. They left us kids with friends/relatives and communicated with what we called “POSTCARDS”!

At age 14 or 15 I rode the train with friends or by myself many states away to go to school. There we called hom by payphone. Oh, I know payphones are so low tech, but we only called the parents perhaps every couple of weeks. Yes, I even flew by myself often.

I am all for taking all sorts of electronic equipment with me to play with, but I also cane be independent when need be too.

Let’s not coddle our kids to much or they will not learn to do things by themselves. THEN they end up on the Dr. Phil TV show explaining their problems to a national audience.
