I have a business reselling web hosting and domain names called Planet Aloha. I had a domain name for years, Planet-Aloha.Info, which expired without me noticing. The hosting company sent what looks like 1 renewal message. because the account was so old and I thought it was with my hosting company, I missed it.

So if you renew before the expiration date it is $10 or so a year. For 15 days after it expires they charge an extra $10 to re-enable it for renewal. After the 15 days, which it now is, the cost to re-enable the domain name is $269. I decided to pass.

So what do you do? Well, I will let the domain expire completely and perhaps I can grab it when it opens up again. In the meantime thought I cut my losses, paid $10 and bought the domain, (drum roll) PlanetAloha.Info (dropping the hyphen). I guess it had been available all along but I got the hyphenated one to match another similar name I had already.

So then it was just a matter of having the reseller account point to the new domain name and my business came back up. I scoured the internet and found a couple of links I had pointing from customer sites to the old name and updated them. I also emailed my customers and told them of the name change.

There are services where you can automatically renew domain names and hosting packages. I like to do it manually because a few times the automatic process has cost me when a hosting package was renewed when the customer had decided to quit the business.

So last night was kind of like having a business and forgetting to pay the rent, then having to move next door.
