I have been trying to get a SodaStream which is a personal soda machine that makes soda from syrup, water and carbon dioxide. They are not available for shipment to Hawaii because of the CO2 cartridges and shipping.

I found some bottles of the Soadstream syrup for sale at the clearence aisle of the local Walmart and decided to get them. They were cherry cola and although conatin sugar, also contain sucralose (Splenda). I am not a fan of imitation sugar, but can attest that the syrup is pretty good. Rather than make carbonated water, I am using seltzer water and adding syrep. Seltzer is carbonated water and should not be confused with club soda wich contains other things such as minerals.

Years ago I made Coke by buying Coke syrup from the Coke delivery man and putting tap water and syrup in a heavy jug. Then adding a bit of dry ice both carbonated and cooled the drink.

If I had a god paying job again, or came into lots of money, I would buy an actual soda fountain. When I was child, by dad had a bar in the basement with all the things you would expect, olives, cherries, mixes, a fridge and so on. As I gew up I would go to the local drug store fountain and get cherry Coke, lemon, lime, chocolate and so on. The soda jerk would mix them up and it was always a treat. back then the Coke had real sugar and you could almost feel your teeth dissovle as you enjoyed the drink. They also added more syrup back then and the sodas were more tasty than today.

Today you can find cola recipies online and even suggestions to what you need to do to make something almost exactly tasting like Coke.

Yes you can just buy soda already mixed and ready to drink, and you can also just go out and have a restaurant serve you a Thanksgiving dinner, but some people prefer to “do it themselves”.
