Having done my duty, I came back home and as I was driving down the driveway, I remembered there is a fruit about ready to pick. I went down the row and removed the first of my Rolinia Deliciosa, also known as “sugar apple” or “sweetsop”. It looks like a pine cone and it yellows as it ripens. Not having had one before I was not sure if I was picking it a bit early or what to expect.

As I opened it, I found only a couple of black seeds. The rest is a creamy, somewhat goopy innard that was slightly yellowish white. The material is somewhat like custard and as I tasted it realized that this is one neat fruit! To me the taste of this variety has a hint of pineapple and a very slight taste of lemon.

This fruit could well be used in smoothies!

One other fruit I am growing has not yet fruited. It is the Mamey Sapote, which also is good in (drum roll) smoothies!

I admit that although I read up on all the fruits I was planting, I had little background in them and had never eaten many of them before. Thus, I am as surprised an anyone with what is growing and what it tastes like.
