I followed the story with interest as I could see the boats and search helicopters from my house.

On Thursday, the search was finally, reluctantly called off, after being extended at least once.

Alexander was 12 and it seems, a good swimmer. It was dark when he disappeared from the rocky outcropping and the only item found was his dive light.

Teams looked in underwater caves and helicopters scanned the water for days for unusual fish movements or other clues; all to no avail.

A sad day for the family and one that is shared by neighbors and island residents alike.

This is another reminder that nothging is perfect in Paradise.
