Am I Missing Something?

Illinois is now the 4th state to allow illegal aliens to apply for a drivers permit. This also allows them to apply for insurance. The state has 250,000 illegal aliens and are involved in 80,000 accidents per year.

So, I guess my question is, other than the state trying to get more revenue, what does this solve? Will these 250,000 people run to sign up with the state to get a license and then run over to the insurance companies to pay for overpriced insurance? Overpriced you say? Some insurance companies look at your credit history to determine if you are a greater risk of accident. Their reasoning is that if you owe lots of money you may commit insurance fraud, etc.

Why would illegal aliens then be at a higher risk? Well, many use cash as their only means of payment, because they don’t have proper ID. I have seen many people here working on a cash basis because they have no Social Security number and pay no taxes. They are “hidden” members of society.

To get a valid drivers license would require them to give a valid address. Many may be afraid that until immigration laws change, letting any government know where they live, might not be in their best interest. Then again, getting license, documenting themselves as it were, getting insurance, getting credit cards, paying taxes and so on, starts a whole slippery slope of documents and ways to give up the hard-earned money they make.

This might just be a case where they may prefer to keep things as they are. They are already driving illegally (thus the reason Illinois wants to change the law). If they get into an accident they currently may not stick around, because they have no license, no insurance, etc. Why make things more complicated for themselves?

Your opinion may vary.
