My though while reading the article was “what a fluff piece”. It is not the problem of the writer because many people would find the article interesting. For us in Hawaii it is “ho hum”. A recent blog entry here talked about 10 hours of no electricity. We have had recent day of cellphone and data outages. It happens often enough here because most people live within a couple miles of the ocean and beyond that is generally a single road around the circumference and a high mountain. It is nearly impossible to bury lines here because we live on solid rock.

The recent dock strike was also a factor in whether we would have fresh food, toilet paper and so on.

So we tend to make do and are usually prepared, although that does not mean we don’t empty shelves when a disaster looms.

It does mean that we tend to keep a supply of money handy. We may have a propane grill handy and our weather allows us to cook outside most any day of the year. We also can sit outside and have things to do that do not involve electricity, internet or telephone.

With tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, vandalism, lava flows, bad drivers and the like, we get to practice being without services often. My county water supply comes from a pumping station a block away.Their facility is out doors and takes up the space of perhaps a bedroom. The pump is run by electricity and I guess in a dire emergency they could hook up a generator to run it for a while. However, many of us here in my neighborhood have water tanks and plenty of reserve to wash with or flush toilets. I personally have 80,000 gallons standing by which would fill three 16 x 34 foot swimming pools. Water is not a problem for me. I would prefer not to drink it as it is untreated rainwater, however in an emergency could if need be.

Although not on my list of disasters possible, I think Hawaii would be better prepared for any type of emergency, including a zombie apocalypse! Keep that in mind when planning your next vacation.
