The folks at CheckPoints.Com have a smartphone app that lets you check in at a store (for example) and get points. Those points are useable towards gift cards at Subway, Amazon, Itunes, CVS, Home Depot and so on.

By signing up with a special code, you get extra points and in just minutes (without leaving the house) I have enough points to get a $1 gift card.

Local stores for me are all in Kona (a ways up the road) but that is not a probelm as I am up there once a week anyway. For me, Safeway [now that we are not picketing them anymore], Long’s Drugs, Walmart, Kmart, Target and so on.

I go to the door of the store and bring up the app. Then I “check in” and get points. As I walk throught the store I will come across items listed on my screen. I scan the barcode and get points. Tyson’s chicken wings will bring me 30 points.

It is a lot like a scavenger hunt, but the points add up. 3200 points would get me a $10 Amazon card. While this may not seem like a lot of fun, I just cashed in some “MyPoints” points which I get for reading ads in email. Those points are worth about $250. I just received a couple of gift cards from WalMart and Lowes.

So, if you think you might be interested, you can download the app “CHECKPOINTS” to your smartphone and when you sign up, enter “lavarock7″ as the bonus code. I get a few points for that. Then when you get a free account, YOU get the opportunity of sharing YOUR OWN bonus code to friends to get points.

Think of it this way, you are already going to the store, you probably already have a smart phone with camera that can scan. You might as well get some points for doing it.

As they say on TV, “Applications are standing by to take the code”.
