Christmas 2009

My friend is sick and in the hospital on Oahu, so I am watching the dogs for her. It is interesting to watch my dog Koa interact with his step-brother (also named Koa). So I have been calling him Big Koa and the other, Little Koa. They prance and nibble each other and are just like litter mates, even though Big Koa is 2.5 years old and 80+ pounds and Little Koa is 6 months old and perhaps, I don’t know, 20 pounds? He certainly eats like Big Koa :-)

Little Koa belongs to a serviceman who returned from overseas a few months ago. The dog was shipped to him and he really loves him. He had not seen him before he arrived in the islands. For the past week, the serviceman has been on the mainland and he is being boarded back here at his birthplace before being shipped back to Oahu in a few days. Both Big Koa and I will miss the little guy. He also looks very much like Big Koa did as a chocolate lab puppy.

The weather was great today hitting 80 or so during the day. However, I think it is about 60 degrees at night and you can be sure that I am under blankets and snuggled between at least a couple big dogs!

For the dogs I have been cutting up raw meat and you can bet they have been eating quite well. Beef, chicken and even turkey fill their stomachs. The big dogs are eating at least a pound to a pound and a half of meat each day.

As for me, because I would be pet-sitting today, I went to COSTCO yesterday and got a rotisserie chicken, Caesar salad and green beans. I also had some leftover chicken fried rice and ice cream all for dinner.

As an aside, turkeys here for Thanksgiving and Christmas on the Big Island have been priced at $3.99 for 17 pound turkey and $4.99 for a 21 pound turkey! We are limited to 2 turkeys a day, so at least SOME of us go shopping every day. With 12 Labradors who each eat perhaps a pound and a half a day, you can see that these go quickly but are certainly cost-effective.

I hope that you all had a Merry Christmas and will have a prosperous New Year!
