Don’t Get Cross

Each day, millions of people push the buttons and sooner or later the lights change, allowing them to cross the street. Millions of pushes a day. Millions.

The story can now be told. Most of those buttons don’t work and have not for a decade or more. Of the 3200 of them, 2500 have been disabled after computer-controlled lights were enabled.

Is it evil for the city to leave them there? Well, they say it costs $300-$400 to remove each one and that adds up to a million dollars.

They also say that if the buttons worked now-a-days in the city, cars would never move with the constant people traffic.

In direct opposition to this, on the south end of the business section of Kailua-Kona, along the ocean in front of Bongo Ben’s, there is a push button. When people actually push the button to cross the streen, lights embeded in the roadway flash and cars come to a screeching halt, allowing people to cross.

Unfortunately, many people just walk across without pushing the button, which is dangerous.

So unlike New Yorkers, here you are welcome t opush the button and watch it work!
