Field of Dreams

The scene, 7pm, just after dusk. It has been lightly raining and the ground is moist. I was working the night shift out of Ventura (wait, that was Dragnet). Still, everything else is valid, the light rain, dusk, moistness.

I was on the computer browsing for some coax cable to replace some TV wires in the house. Outside I hear some noise and voices and see some lights. I think it is the neighbors looking for their dog, Akoa. I go to the lanai (porch) to see what’s up.

Months ago I had trees cut down which had been growing into my electric lines. The logs now litter the corner of the property. I see three people climbinbg over them and calling to me “Hello!”

The leader of these people, these apparent nomad wandering souls have a backpack on, not unlike the one in Ghostbusters. I begin to suspect something is afoot.

“We are the Coqui Squad” (or words to that effect). I know from whence they come. Aye, neighbors they are, sure as the day is long.

They have come across my field to help spread dreams. Those dreams will come as soon as they spray baking soda in the air in a new Hawaiian ritual. The baking soda (aquired at low cost from the mines we call COSTCO), will be sprayed as a powder across the trees near my house, dusting the area with pulverized powdery spray. This powder will hopefully settle on the coqui frogs, stopping their “ko key” call and allow me to sleep at night.

You are welcome to investigate the coqui frog as I will not dwell on such a tale, having already spun that yarn here fortnights ago. Still, the said powder is better for the environment than the citric acid we have been using in the past.

When the baking soda comes from the sprayer, it covers the air like smoke and settles on the leaves and frogs. It clings to them and I guess changes their chemistry a bit. They cannot last in an acid or basic atmosphere. Such tender creatures of the night soon meet their demise.

As they sprayed, we may have seen a frog drop to earth, yet we might not have. They are tiny creatures (we think they are creatures of the devil, but who can be sure).

I can attest to you that the noise of one tiny coqui is enough to keep you wide awake at night much like a cricket in your ear.

As they finished a bag of the dry potion, the noise stopped and so far in the past hour I have not heard a “ko key” noise.

Thus these kind-hearted souls who came through my field tonight, may have also brought me sweet dreams! Thus, my field of dreams story told to you this night.

Sleep well my friends!
