I Think Were Alone Now

There is an old song titles “I Think Were Alone Now” by Tommy James and the Shondells.

I think we’re alone now
There doesn’t seem to be anyone around
I think we’re alone now
The beating of our hearts is the only sound

Oftentimes my blog entries are song titles because music is our way of expressing who we are, what we are doing and so on.

Lately we have been told to self-distance ourselves to reduce the spread of a contagious virus. I live on a farm of over 8 acres and with the exception of a couple workers this week pruning some trees and an invasion of feral pigs, it is empty and quiet. I take the dogs on a daily walk up the farm but it is not enough exercise for any of us. They are old and I am old and lazy.

At night I DO hear my heart beating and sometimes it is quite disconcerting. Oh yeah, having a beating heart is a good thing in and of itself, but mine beats too much at times. After my heart surgery it seems they moved my heart a bit closer to the front of my chest and with the blood flow increased, my heart beating is more pronounced. Lying in bed I feel it beating and can even see a small blurring of my eyes as my head seems to move ever so slightly with each beat. If there was more neighborhood noise, I might not hear the actual beat and be distracted.

Look at the way
We gotta hide what we’re doin’
‘Cause what would they say
If they ever knew
Most people are doing this self-distancing although some openly defy the order. It is difficult for them when they see wide open spaces on the beach or in the water and would prefer not to be at home. Schools and businesses are closed and airlines making only a few flights to move people and supplies and keep their airport slots active.
There are lots of things I could be doing however I have gotten lazy in the old age. I don’t just have projects, I have lists of projects I’d like to complete. Some projects have been addressed but most are still in the planning stage. I had the farm mowed and the coffee trees pruned, but still have to get weeds under control, fertilization started and replanting scheduled. There are home projects such as rebuilding the stairs, extending the roof, getting the irrigation system repaired and I’d love to fix the kitchen and get a place downstairs ready for someone to stay. Then they could do some of my projects in exchange for room and board.
However, in the meantime it is back to the song.
I think we’re alone now
There doesn’t seem to be anyone around
I think we’re alone now
The beating of our hearts is the only sound

  1. I know how you feel. My “get up and go” has “got up and left”. I’m a 76 year old Mechanical Engineer so I know how to do things but just don’t have the ambition to do much. Once I start something I usually finish though.
Can you shoot the feral pigs? I understand they can cause a lot of damage!
    How are the dogs doing?

    Stay healthy.

  2. Yes, you can hunt and kill feral pigs. I have a call in to get a guy to come with his dogs. I don’t know if he catches pigs or his dogs just instills in them the ‘fear of bacon’ (not Kevin Bacon, that something else) or if the smell of the dogs scares them away. Time will tell.
