Born in 1831, Bernice Pauahi Bishop was a direct descendant of King Kamehameha I. Her estate is the largest landowner in the state at about 9% land area. My farm is on land in her estate and some of my profits go to the school system. She died in 1884. Bishop wished that a portion of her estate be used “to erect and maintain in the Hawaiian Islands two schools…one for boys and one girls, to be known as, and called the Kamehameha Schools.”

This bequest has caused a number of legal challanges, all the way to the Supreme Court, because it was understood that Bishop wanted the Hawaiian children to get the benefit of her estate, Hawaiians having not gotten the same schooling as other children here. This was before Hawaii became a part of the U.S. Congress agreed recently that the U.S. illegally overthrew the Hawaiian Kingdom (a long story). Kamehameha Schools has a rich history in music and has an annual song contest. Here is one entry, the Seniors, class of 2010: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSsDiTGWLFM&feature=related

Now back to the fun viral video. Lip synching to a few songs, the video appears to have only 2 or 3 cuts; otherwise the segments are filmed live! We are talking 7 minutes of video with what looks like the whole school featured. The video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8Wugetsezo

I hope that you enjoy this musical blog posting. I’ll post one other later today.
