Some of those peop,le I still converse with and one co-worker will be moving here to my island and be living within a couple miles of me. I have been helping him and his wife to prepare their new house/farm.

So knowing many people over the years, it is difficult to hear of issues with them. It is also difficult to read the periodic obituaries that cross my email. I open them with trepidation, not knowing if it was someone I worked directly with or someone who was a co-worker in my building or elsewhere.

At the time I worked there, we were one big family and no one was more than a 7 digit telephone number away. Being in Information Technology (the computer group) my job involved employees and generally not the publi8c. So it was not unheard of to call someone in France to discuss a problem.

Even if I did not work directly with someone, I knew much about their jobs and challenges, whether it was the motor pool, hardware, software or HR.

People who have not worked in a large “family-type” company probably can’t imagine this, so I pass along for what it is worth.
