Phone Home

My Grandmother had a number 247-1407 in the 50’s and kept it for decades. Then the phone company decided to change it. I don’t remember if it was because she was moving a few miles away, but I was able to get the phone company to let her keep the number. After all, everyone who knew her knew her number from memory. Many of these people were elderly also.

At the same time, my Dad had an office with numbers 545-3555 and 545-3556. Our home number was 545-3557. 54 was listed on the phone as “Kilmer”. However a few years later we moved to a college town where we had operator assisted call. I don’t remember the number but it started with “Walnut 7”. The phone company used to use names to designate the location of the central office.

When I got a free telephone number recently, it was kinda neat, and along the lines of 415-777-0777 (not the real number). I used it for testing as the number didn’t cost me anything and the calls would go through the internet to my equipment and account. When the company hosting this number decided to close down, I had a choice to drop it or port it to another company and pay a fee every month. After agonizing for a while, I kept it and it costs about $20 a year.

I love free things so when I found I could get free International telephone numbers I did that too. I have about 5 in the UK and 2 free INUMs which do not not map to a particular country. These INUMs may be dialed through many phone companies for free. That means people around the world might be able to reach me for free, not that anyone wants to, but they COULD :-)

Sometimes I have used phone numbers that spelled things, my toll free coffee website has one.  When I moved here, I received a number which happened to spell FAT-CELL.
