Refuge

Two days ago I took Koa down to the ocean for a walk and a “swim”. I say swim in quotes because at the national Park, dogs must be on leashes. The Place of Refuge is one of 3 national Parks in Hawaii (the other two being Haleakala on Maui and Hawaii Volcano National Park on the other side of this island.

When Mom was here we went to the same park and within 15 minutes saw large turtles, dolphin and whales!

This park has a visitor area with some Hawaiian cultural exhibits, a picnic area generally used by locals, and a hiking trail that follows the coast.

Koa was good and did not pull on the lead; unlike O`Lena who I took today for the same walk.

Both played in the water as best as they could and really enjoyed themselves.

I took this photo on the trail as we were leaving today. It looks northward towards the Place of Refuge. The surf is pretty rough today, although it is hard to tell in the photo. You also cannot tell that we are on a cliff well above the water below.

I also saw this flower growing from a crack in the lava.
