Near my hour I mentioned a few houses badly damaged; one move dout into the middle of Kealakekua Bay. In the bad news, good news, bad news department, a guys house moved off the foundation (dunno if it was the one floating in the bay). Better news was he was not home, but the bad news was that he had just gone to Oahu to get chemo therapy.

For those who saw our “Kona pool during a 6.8 earthquake” we are working on another video from security cameras showing a wall of water arriving at the resort where I used to work.

I am hearing that the Kona pier has been condemed and it will cost $500,000 to fix it. If that is the case, then we have a big problem as that is where our crusie ships come in. Not that it makes a difference to this discussion, however Kona is the only port where ships must use tenders (boats) to bring people to shore because our bay is not deep enough for the cruise ship to dock.

In town along the seawall, parts of the sidewalk washe away and many stores are closed. Still, people were strolling through town and just a block away, life goes on, so we ARE open and continuing to offer aloha to visitors.

We count our blessings because we continue to be lucky after a 6.8 and a 6.8 earthquake and a tsunai, all of which could have been worse then they are. Oh yes, we have an active volcano on the Hilo side of the island, but that is perhaps 60 miles away as the crow flies.
