Capping the well

Take something like an umbrella (where the metal points are quite numerous and sharp) then turn it upside down. Instead of a shaft and handle, make it a pipe which can flow cement.

Lower the thing closed. Then once in the pipe, slowly dump cement down the pipe. It will begin to expand the upside down umbrella. As this begins, the umbrella slowly fills and expands to slowly fill the pipe. As the flow slows down, there is more and more cement inside to keep it in place. Finally, the flow stops.

This seems more sensible than dumping junk in the hole. Here the hole slowly gets smaller until it closes.
