By now the smell of fireworks (legal and illegal) has drifted away and you are done with yet another ball game or two, you may be ready to address those New Years Resolutions. Here is a diversion for you :-)

You can have a “whale of a good time” by going to these sites:

  • www.whalesong.net
  • There you can listen to live audio of whales in Hawaii. Although we have some whales here year round, the humpbacks come down from Alaska for the holidays and then head back to colder weather around March. They give birth here in the warm waters and live off their fat, then head to colder climates to feed.

Scientists are not sure what the songs mean, however they believe it is related to mating.

Whales within a large area sing the same song. All North Atlantic humpbacks sing the same song, and those of the North Pacific sing a different song. Each population’s song changes slowly over a period of years without repeating.

Browse over to Wikipedia and look up “humpback whales” for more info.
