Sure enough, Google Earth had a street-level photo and the house has not changed much in decades. It is fun to go browse. The hose used for outside shots actually has a cemetary across the street, which of course was not a part of the series.

Wikipedia says that the outside shot was made in 1968 for the pilot and the skyline did not show the twin towers, as they had not yet been built.

The house used in the outside shots is at 89-70 Cooper Avenue, Glendale, New York and that is enough for you to use Google Earth to zoom in. Then just choose the street view.

A difference noted that in the series, Archies house had a front porch, this house does not have one.

In a previous blog I mentioned that many of the building used in the Superman TV series were also used on the Andy Griffith Mayberry town.

Many TV series were filmed on movie studio lots and you vbegan to notice that the Cleavers house might be in the same neighborhood as Hazel was a maid. The towns would be different, but there were only so many neighbood movie locations.

I mentioned that I have had a couple of surprises with actual locations when I found myself at the Atlanta Olympic bombing site. Another time was when I was driving between Colorado Springs and Denver and happened to make a wrong turn looking for my hotel. I drove around and all of a sudden was driving past Columbine High School which had been in the news just a while back, because of the shootings. On TV the views showed mountains in the background and here I was surrounded by housing developments. It just did not dawn on me where the school was in relation to me.

On the lighter side now, after many trips to Kauai and Oahu, I kept seeing many locations from films I had seen. People who had visited Kauai a few times would feel quite at home watching Lilo and Stitch because Disney sent illustrators to the island to get the feel of the place.

In “Honeymoon in Vegas” you get to see parts of Kauai. “Six Days and Seven Nights” shows the Na Pali Coast and of course, Jurassic Park movies feature Kauai too.

If you have had a TV show or movie filmed near you, it might be fun to see how the set and actual locations differ.
