Since getting Earthlink as a dialup in DC more than a decade ago, I used their email service and by now have many of my business items sent to those addresses. I caution people not to do that because it makes it very difficult to dump an ISP later on and move all your friends and accounts to a new email address.

Over the years I purchased many domain names and have begun to use them for my accounts; however I still have hundreds of people using my ISP email accounts.

Last night I decided that if I were to switch to RoadRunner, I would need to drop Earthlink and move all these emails. Then I saw that for $10 a month more I can get almost 50% increase in speed and not have to move away from Earthlink. Since my modem is capable of the faster speed they were able to send the command to my modem and upgrade my speed without a service call. This keeps me from having to drop them in the near future, however, I will start moving my emails to an email account just in case.

If you own a domain you probably have email accounts already that you can use. Otherwise an email account like Gmail.Com might be a good idea. I can ytell you that Hotmail and AOL accounts make you look a bit unprofessional. In the case of a domain, it can be a cheap as $10 a year to have your own email account.

If you are not very technical, Gmail might be just the thing for you, however if you want a website and email, you may need a bit of help setting things up. Still, the cost may be $30 a year for website, email and no ads. I would be happy to help anyone set something like that up at very reasonable prices.
